Our Goal -
We aim to make the South End a stronger community by building meaningful connections with neighbors, leaders, and city officials.
About
The Neighborhood Planning Assembly (NPA), created by a City Council ordinance in 1982 under Mayor Bernie Sanders, is a monthly forum in each Burlington ward which is open to everyone. The NPA is many things: an opportunity for residents to voice concerns, make announcements, ask questions; a chance for city officials and non-profit organizations to share information on current projects; a showcase for local artists and business owners to talk about their work and seek suggestions on future projects. Sometimes the NPA, using funds allocated by the Council, supports community-building initiatives like block parties, interpreters for candidate debates, an outdoor family film night or even a neighborhood picnic table where people can gather and talk.
Each NPA is organized by a Steering Committee, a group of volunteers elected by the meeting each year. The Ward 5 NPA currently has eight members. The Committee plans the agenda, advertises upcoming events, and facilitates the meeting. After 18 months of Zoom meetings, the Ward 5 NPA is now embarking on a “hybrid” format: in-person meetings with the opportunity to also participate via Zoom.
The NPA discriminates against no person or group but it insists on behavior that respects each person’s opinion or identity.
